The author is very harsh, and the editor continually apologizes in the notes, especially for ashab al-ra'y whom al-`Uqayli criticizes unmercifully. One wonders whether this is not another example of the tendency to throw out too much, pointed out by G. H. A. Juynbohl on the basis of the unfortunately unpublished Abu al-Qasim al-Balkhi (d. 319/931?), Kitab Qabul al-akhbar wa-ma`rifat al-rijal. -CM
