The Evolution of the Bibliography

The first version of the bibliography was compiled August 1995. As of March 1, 1996, it became a joint project with Andreas Goerke. Dr. Christopher Melchert has made significant contributions since November 2, 1996.

The bibliography is modified periodically. It is selective and far from comprehensive or consistent. The selection is not made according to any well-defined or objective criterion. However, the intention is to keep making improvements. Please tell us about any errors you find here or any relevant publications you learn about.

The Problems of Transliteration and non-ASCII Characters

The first version of the bibliography did not contain diacritical marks or any other non-ASCII characters. Some progress has been made in providing accents for European languages and transliterations for Arabic long vowels, but the process is not complete. For now Arabic transliteration is especially erratic.

Acknowledgment

Thanks to everybody who has contributed to this bibliography by sending new references or corrections.

The annotations on hadith compilations that are signed -BS are based almost enirely on other secondary sources listed in this bibliography. In other words, they are not based on direct study of the primary sources themselves.
