Portage Yacht Club - Portage Lake, Washtenaw County

NOTE: You must CHECK IN at the office before going on to scan the 
lake.  The office is just off the parking lot and it is marked 
"OFFICE."  If there is no one there, you may go ahead.

Good viewing of a large portion of Portage Lake is available at the 
Portage Yacht Club.  Portage Yacht Club is on the southwest shore 
of Portage Lake in Washtenaw County.  It's on Dexter-Pinckney Rd. 
about 0.4 miles north of McGregor Rd.  This is less than a mile 
south of the Livingston Co./Washtenaw Co. line.  There is a large 
parking lot, and the owners of Portage Yacht Club are birder 
friendly.  You can view the lake from the shore, the boardwalk, or, 
if the manager unlocks the door to a stairwell for you, the upper
upper deck. 


Little Portage Lake
===================

Another 0.3 miles north of McGregor Rd. is a bridge over a 
channel that joins Portage Lake and Little Portage Lake.  
Waterfowl often congregate in Little Portage Lake there, 
especially in winter when in most years the water on both sides 
of the channel remains open.  Find a place to park completely off 
the road.  View the lakes between the houses.  Do not view from 
the bridge.  It is barely wide enough for two lanes of travel.
