Wing Preserve -- Washtenaw County This used to be a nice place according to Susan Falcone (at bottom), but Barb says immediately below that it's kaput. If you learn sometime that this site has been restored and is again open, please let me know. To: birders@umich.edu I found this place this morning on my way home from an insect foray at Matthaei. I saw it listed on Bruce's site originally and thought I would try to stop there but it looks like that info should be updated. What's left of the gate has a posted message that the property is closed because of vandalism to the boardwalk. It looks like it's been closed for quite a while. Does anyone know if the WAS ever plans to reopen it? Many years ago before the observation platform was built, we spent a couple of weeks watching a great crested flycatcher pair that had built a nest in one of the wood duck boxes right on the boardwalk. A wonderful lesson in marsh entomology! [Susan's directions added 25 April 2003: BMB] The Wing Preserve is on Warren road, between Vorhies & Dixboro. Not sure where you're coming from, but if you're in Ann Arbor, here are the directions: --take Plymouth Rd east past US23 --turn north (left) on Dixboro --turn east (right) on Warren --the Sanctuary is on the north side of the road, and is well-marked. A good place to watch ytht's up close is at tiny Wing preserve on i think warren rd. west of vorhies; they and others nest in the overgrowth above a marsh that has be made accessable by a walkway. DBs
