Grace Lake (Tyler Road pond) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ While in the area check for gulls also at Edison Lake and Belleville Lake. Bruce ----------------------------------------------------------------- Birders, The body of water in Van Buren Twp., Wayne County, formerly known as the "Tyler Road pond" now bears an official name of Grace Lake, according to signs and maps in the Visteon complex that surrounds it. Today, 12/14/2004, just before noon, I found an adult Iceland (Kumlein's) Gull among the nearly 1000 gulls present here. There was also an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and about a dozen Great Black-backed Gulls. Very few gulls were at the Woodland Meadows Landfill to the north, and not much on Edison Lake to the south. From I-94 take Haggerty Road north about 1 mile to Tyler Road. Turn right (east) and go about 1/2 mile [over I-275] to the Visteon entrance on the left [right before a small cemetery]. Bear to the right and find a place to park with a view of the "lake". If you look at your DeLorme p. 33, you'll see that 275 hooks off to the west north of 94, then heads north right at Tyler. Note lake just east of 275 and north of Tyler. Now there is a huge new parts plant north of that lake, but you can access a view of the lake from a quaint cemetery off of Tyler Road, north side obviously. I have only been there in the winter, when the gulls are resting by the 100s on the ice. It's their napping area and they fly between there and Edison Lake. Should be good before it freezes over too--just don't have personal experience. --Macklin Macklin Smith Department of English University of Michigan ---------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Dan Sparks-Jackson" To: birders@umich.edu Subject: [birders] Re: Washtenaw & Jackson County highlights, 1/10 Date sent: Mon, 11 Jan 2010 14:20:24 -0500 Lest I should spread disinformation, I have been informed by several helpful sources in-the-know that the Tyler Road Visteon Facility can be accessed on weekends via entrances off Ecorse and Hannan Roads. I was unaware of those options, but probably should've been more persistent. Apparently the Tyler Road entrance is the tertiary option for the complex, albeit the one closest to the 'gull action'.
