LeFurge Preserve -- owned by the Superior Land Conservancy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This property, 131 acres, consists of a formerly farmed field which is being restored to natural habitat and which backs up to an old growth forest. The entrance to the property is on the east side of Prospect Road exactly 1/2 mile north of Geddes Road (and 1/2 mile south of Vreeland Road -- there is a drain at approximately the northern edge of the property). There are small signs (not highly visible from the road) and a locked gate at the property entrance. Parking is on the shoulder of the road. There are several damp areas on the property, which will be restored to natural wetland as one of Superior Land Conservancy's restoration efforts. A walk on the property can be very interesting (coyotes have even been seen here), with great birding, especially near the woods and in the wet corners of the property. ---- Superior Land Conservancy was established several years ago in Superior Township (just east of Ann Arbor), and has made some great strides in land/habitat preservation in the midst of tremendous pressure to develop. Through April 1996 the SLC has made three land acquisitions (LeFurge Preserve, Springhill Nature Preserve, and Cherry Hill Preserve). It is working to preserve other natural areas within the Township. Please consider becoming a member of the Superior Land Conservancy to help in this effort! For information about Superior Land Conservancy, call Bill Secrest (the Chairman of the SLC board) at (313) 482-5957, or e-mail Jan Berry at jeberry@umich.edu. Springhill Nature Preserve -- owned by the Superior Land Conservancy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This 30 acre preserve is an EXCELLENT spot for spring wildflowers. It is on Berry Road, just south of Ford Road and about 3/4 miles east of Prospect Road. There is a large wooden sign marking the property, which is adjacent to a large white house at 3401 Berry Road. The Springhill Preserve entrance is through a field near the sign. There is an easement on the property at 3401 Berry to get to the Preserve, which is largely wooded and contains a wetland area. The preserve is also adjacent to a field that has been farmed. ---- Superior Land Conservancy was established several years ago in Superior Township (just east of Ann Arbor), and has made some great strides in land/habitat preservation in the midst of tremendous pressure to develop. Cherry Hill Preserve -- owned by the Superior Land Conservancy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This preserve is 160 acres of diverse terrain, including wetlands, meadow and woods. It is on Cherry Hill Road just east of Gale Road and east of the Glennborough Estates development on the north side of the road. The property is marked with yellow "Nature Preserve" signs, but for additional landmarks: the property extends from the power lines just east of Glennborough Estates to the big red oak just west of the next driveway on the north side of Cherry Hill Road, and then north past the meadow into the woods. There is a radio tower on the south side of Cherry Hill that can be used for an orientation landmark while walking on the property. The bird population here is as diverse as the terrain, with a resident owl population as well as many wetland species, warblers, bluebirds, etc. ---- Superior Land Conservancy was established several years ago in Superior Township (just east of Ann Arbor), and has made some great strides in land/habitat preservation in the midst of tremendous pressure to develop.
