Strieter Road ponds =================== Flash!! March 1, 2000 Dea Armstrong says, "Sad to report that it looks as though Strieter Road (for shorebirds) has been turned into a field with a drainage pond instead of a field with great mudflats." Go past Wagner, past Zeeb, then about another 2 miles. You'll see a small cluster of houses and a church. Steiter Rd comes in here. Make a right on Strieter just beyond the church and go less than 1/4 mile. The 'ponds' are on your right. They're basically flooded fields. If you want, continue on down Strieter to the end and make a left on Liberty (a right will take youback into town). Go ~1/2 mile to Wildwood Lane and check the birds in the gravel pit pond there. Warning: Liberty is gravel on this stretch (west of Zeeb) and can be treacherous at this time of year. Last time I was down there a few weeks ago I saw a tow truck that had gotten too close to the 'lip' of the road in one of the marshier areas, and had slipped right into the mud. Another tow truck was attempting to pull it out. hth, Mary On Tue, 15 Apr 1997, James D Fessenden wrote: > Can any of you give me more precise directions to the Strieter Road > ponds? Thanks -Jim > ======================================================================== Strieter Road is 4 miles west of Wagner Road outside of Ann Arbor. The ponds are just north of Scio-Church Road. (Bob Arthurs) It is worth checking several times and driving roads in the area. There is another pond at Liberty & Steinbach and also at Scio Church & Zeeb. (and numerous others that can be found in the area) It should probably be mentioned that these are not really ponds but low spots in fields - which certainly qualifies them as wetlands but not ponds in the traditional sense of the word. Priority: normal The Strieter Road ponds were a bonanza this morning. When I arrived at 10:30 I didn't see very much - a few Canada Geese, mallards, a pair of black ducks and gulls. Things began picking up when I discovered a Ruddy Duck. Shortly after that a small group of Pintails flew in along with several (50+) Canada Geese. Still no Snow Geese. At this point I decided to drive around a little and scan the fields for the Snow Geese. As I was pulling away I noticed another small duck - a Green-winged Teal! I did scan the fields and saw nothing of interest. I swung by the ponds again and there was a white goose clearly visible. I stopped and pulled out the scope and found both phases of Snow Geese (it was now 11). What a nice half-hour. Strieter Road is 4 miles west of Wagner Road outside of Ann Arbor.
