South Pond - Ann Arbor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2006 16:50:11 -0800 (PST) From: Mike Sefton Subject: [birders] Re: Shovelers, Hooded Mergansers, and Trumpeter Swans at South Pond To: birders@umich.edu Hi Dave, Assuming it's the Ann Arbor South Pond, it's on the north side of Huron River Drive between Huron Parkway and Hogback Rd., where Chalmers dead ends at Huron River Drive. You can either park on Huron River Drive and take a path just west of the bridge until you overlook the pond, or park in the last parking lot at the east end of the road in Gallup Park, then walk east on the bike path on the south side of the Huron River until you can see South Pond on your right beyond the fence. Yes, it was the Ann Arbor South Pond I was talking about. We found a really good spot to park for viewing of water birds. If you turn off of Huron Parkway onto East Huron River Drive and continue on that road until you pass Chalmers Drive and go over the little bridge. There's a small spot on the side of the road that's dirt and good for parking. To get good viewing we just walked next to the road back over the bridge. To the right is an tiny little path, it might even be a well developed deer trail, that leads to a flat, open area that has a great view of most of the west end of the pond. The parking is close and it's a short walk the other direction to a spot where you can view a little inlet of the east end off a bridge. The only downside to this viewing spot is that it's a little noisier. Good birding, Isabel McKay
