From: Karl Overman [mailto:martineoverman@earthlink.net] Sent: Friday, November 02, 2007 8:00 AM Subject: Morenci sewage lagoons The town of Morenci is a half mile north of the Ohio line in SW Lenawee County. From the center of town go west on Morenci Road about a mile to Sims Highway (north-south roads in Lenawee County are typically labelled highways). This is also the road to the Morenci medical center. Go north on Sims .7 miles to the sewage lagoons. They have to be one of the most accessible lagoons in the state as the lagoon with the most bird activity is easily viewed from the road. A scope is needed for the shorebirds and even then considerable squinting may be needed. At the south end of this roadside lagoon, there is a dirt track that leads to a small hill overlook a lagoon in back of the first lagoon. Water levels were too high for shorebirds yesterday in this lagoon but there were still ducks. Also the weedy strips of vegetation next to where you park your vehicle were loaded with sparrows--White-crowns, Tree, Field, Song. Back on Sims, continue north to view the lagoon on the north side of the road that is at a higher elevation, Once around the corner, you can go to the NW corner of that pond and check it out. This pond has had a few ducks but nothing great while I have checked it this fall. This is a fairly remote location for birding in Michigan but quite productive.
