Lillie Park ~~~~~~~~~~~ From: "Mulherin" To: "birders" Subject: Lillie Park Just for a change of pace, my wife and I took a walk through Lillie Park at Ellsworth and Platt. We walked down the old railroad grade to the back pond, where we saw an Olive-Sided Flycatcher on top of a dead tree. In all, from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, we saw 25 species, most of them common. The weird part was, we saw at least a dozen yellow warblers, but not a single other warbler! I think this park has potential, though. The back pond might be nice for shorebirds throughout the year. First, this is the park that is east of Platt and south of Ellsworth, right? Next, where is the back pond? I've been to the park, but I was only aware of one pond, visible from the parking area. The access to the "back" pond is through the power company easement just South of the main park entrance on Platt. You walk the wood edges there, picking up warblers, sparrows and peewees. When you get to the end of the easement, there's a trail off to the right that leads through some young woods. Follow that to the back pond, but take a scope if you hope to look at shorebirds. Went back today, saw a pair of brown thrashers at the back pond. Also saw a least flycatcher and two peewees I've got a feeling this is a nice flycatcher and warbler (still just tons of yellows) area, but my 120-pound dog wouldn't let me explore thoroughly or stealthfully. Another good spot to check, besides the ones mentioned below, would be the interior of Lillie Park on Platt Rd. (across from the landfill), which has habitat similar to Swift Run. Walk up the old railroad bed at the south end of Lillie to reach this part of the park. Good thing I had my 7 year old with me to share it with. We continued our walk to the 'primitive' ponds, and saw scads of red wings, a kettle of four turkey vultures, lots of deer tracks, and picked up a bunch of brachiopod fossils. A good trip. Bill Moran
