Exit at Will Carleton Rd and head for Flat Rock (east). At Flat Rock, make a left on Telegraph, cross the bridge, then right on N. Huron River Dr at the first light. Take Huron River Dr through Rockwood all the way to the end. Make a left on Jefferson - LEMP entrance is on the right a couple hundred yards up the Rd. The hawkwatch main site is at the boat launch. If nobody's there, try either the south end of the park or Pte. Mouillee (S. on Jefferson to Campeau, then all the way back to the paved parking lot/boat launch). Getting BACK to Jackson/Ann Arbor will be difficult, as northbound 275 is being completely redone. The best way is probably to either follow Will Carleton east all the way to Milan and get on 23 (you have to work your way north on city streets in Milan), or to take 75 north from Rockwood to Sibley or Eureka Rd., then take either of those Roads west to Middlebelt and then N. on Middlebelt to 94. hth, Mary Mary Wise | (313) 647-6230 Computer Systems Specialist * LSA Information Technology | auntyem@umich.edu 3557 LSA Bldg 1382 * University of Michigan | -------------------------------*** ------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Rick Neubig Subject: Re: Holiday Beach Jan, This is the absolute peak of the fall broadwing migration. It is usually between Sept 12 and 24 so it is on the later side this year. Holiday Beach in Ontario (South of Windsor) and Lake Erie Metropark (south of Detroit) have the greatest counts of broadwings north of Texas. Yesterday at Lake Erie Metropark they had about 50,000 broadwings (I was only there for a couple hours and had to leave before the final tally was in). The Hawkfest there was Saturday and Sunday so they had a spectacular day for it. Today is likely to be another big broadwing day so if you can get out there it would be worth it. By next weekend almost all of the broadwings will be through and there will be lots of sharpshins and cooper's hawks (though the counts are likely to be in the hundreds rather than the thousands). Rick P.S. You can see the running tallys on the web at http://www.nbhc.com/birdhawk/weeknnha.htm The Lake Erie Metropark count is labelled SMRR (Southeast Michigan Raptor Research) and Holiday Beach is listed as Holiday Beach. Of the two SMRR has greater numbers but at Holiday Beach they seem to come in closer. We do most of our counting at Lake Erie Metropark (at the boat launch in the north end of the park) and Pte. Mouillee State Game Area (at the main Headquarter parking lot.) To find our hawk watch sites: Get on I-75 and if direction is coming from north or south get off at Gibraltar Rd. (exit 29) and head east toward the lake and follow the signs to Lake Erie Metropark.
