Wheeler Service Center / Ann Arbor Landfill / MRF The entrance to the the Wheeler Service Center--formerly called the Swift Run Service Center, the City of Ann Arbor Landfill, and the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)--is at 4120 Platt Road, south of Ellsworth Road. Of primary interest there is the large pond (borrow pit), where waterfowl and shorebirds may be found. Open 7am to 4pm weekdays and some Saturdays until 12:00 noon; closed on Sundays. Please take time to review the rules they have set out for us to follow when we visit so that we can maintain the relationship. NAP volunteers have some special access privileges but all other visitors need to first check in at the scale house with Hank and park only in designated spots at the MRF. LANDFILL ACCESS Regulations: A. All site visitors MUST first check-in at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) Scalehouse each time they are on site. B. The site access hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, on non-holiday weeks. Closed on holidays. All visitors must be off the site before 4 p.m. The front gate at 4120 Platt Road will be locked at all other times. The site may be open on some Saturday mornings until noon. C. Visitors must drive only on roads and park only in designated parking lots or pre-approved areas. DO NOT DRIVE OR PARK ON THE SHOULDERS OF PAVED ROADS. D. No open fires, smoking or hunting are allowed at any time. E. No dumping or removal of items, including vegetation or compost are allowed. F. Visitors must demonstrate extreme caution around equipment and operations at all times. Do not touch or obstruct equipment or otherwise interfere with site operators. Bowman" Hi Bruce, [...] When the scale house is open, Monday through Friday until about 3pm (but sometimes later), and on Saturday until about noon, you should drive across the scales to check in with the employee there, then park in the scale house parking lot and walk across the paved road to the edge of the big pond. If you are getting there close to closing time, be mindful of the time. You definitely do not want to be locked in. The landfill is closed on Sundays. Good birding, Mike Sefton
