Independence Lake is one of the best places in Washtenaw County for waterfowl. Independence Lake County Park is in the northcentral part of the county, straight north from the west side of Ann Arbor. The entrance is on Jennings Road, an east-west road. Get to North Territorial Road. Go east or west, depending on your direction, to Webster-Church Road (north-south). Webster-Church Road is west of Ann Arbor but east of Dexter. Go north on Webster- Church to Valentine. From Webster-Church and Valentine you can get to either the east side or the west side of the lake. To get to the west side turn left onto Valentine and go to Merrill Road. Turn right (north) and go to McClatchey. Turn right. McClatchey will take you to the lake. To get to the park entrance and the east side of the lake turn right from Webster-Church onto Valentine. Go to Jennings Road. Turn left and follow Jennings north and then east. One third of a mile after turning east you will come to the entrance to the park. If the gate is open, you can turn in and drive north along the east side of the lake and to the north side. Independence Lake County Park is open only in the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day). There is an entry fee of two or three dollars. If the park is not open, you can still walk in anytime. Park off to the side of the gate. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Bruce M.
