From: "Duck Watcher" To: birders@umich.edu Subject: [birders] American Center Marsh Date sent: Sat, 28 Aug 2004 For everyone who is interested: The American Center Marsh (its real name is the "American Commerce Conservancy Centre" but that's too long) is located on 11 mile road in Southfield. A good way to get there is to follow Franklin to American Drive. Follow American Drive until you see a small marsh and the begining of the boardwalk. There is no parking at the mini-marsh, so you have to use one of the company's parking lots. If you do miss American Drive, continue along Franklin to 11 mile road. Make a right on 11 mile, and drive until you see the small marsh. Once you see the marsh, take the first street on the right. (which is American Drive). Again, you have to use one of the companies parking lots. The marsh is only several acres, but noteworthy birds such as Wilson's Snipe, Hooded Merganser and Rudy Duck have shown up here. It was starting to get dark, and I couldn't see very well. I'm sure I missed a few birds because of the lighting. Here are the few birds of interest that we saw during the half-hour period: Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 (A very fresh juvenile) American Coot - 2 Virginia Rail - 1 Great-blue Heron - 1 Killdeer - 1 Spotted Sandpiper - 1 Barn Swallow - ~12 Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 2 Eastern Kingbird - 4 The Virginia Rail was on a small patch of mud right next to the boardwalk. The rail-mud is located near the gazebo. If you do go the the marsh, I highly reccomend that you walk to the end of the boardwalk. The end of the boardwalk is where most of the action is. There is a small amount of shorebird habitat, enough for a few shorebirds. Faggan" Subject: Re: [birders] Re: American Center Marsh American Center Marsh is the wetland on Eleven Mile road a half mile or so west of Telegraph (U. S. 24) in Southfield, Oakland County. It's where the Eared Grebe was found a couple of years ago. I go there quite a bit and I can't recommend a special trip from Ann Arbor. ===== Joseph E. Faggan Beverly Hills, Michigan jfaggan@yahoo.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Bruce, I have posted several times about this marsh. It is located on 11 Mile Rd just east of Inkster Road. It is a man made area of about 18 - 20 acres. It is one of my favorite places to stop and look. The whole marsh is divided in half by a nice wooden boardwalk. The other day I saw Caspian terns fishing there... one caught a goldfish! To the south of this marsh is Holy Sepulchure Cemetery. They have a nice pond area which hosts a small heron rookery. Deer, fox, and coyotes have been seen there. By the way Neil, did you notice the two baby coots? They were there last weekend. -- Mary Attitude is a choice.
