Interlibrary Loan of Genealogical Material

Most libraries with separate genealogical collections won't lend material from that collection, but it may be possible to get a photocopy of an article or portion of a book from such a collection. Librarian's Serving Genealogists maintains a list of Genealogical Libraries on the WWW and Golden West Marketing offers a Directory of Genealogy Libraries in the U.S. (scroll down).

There are exceptions. Cyndi's List has a page that includes a section with Genealogy Lending Libraries and Archives

Before requesting genealogical material on ILL, check the Interlibrary Loan Policies Directory to see if that library will lend genealogical materials.

The UMI Local History and Genealogy fiche set includes over 17.000 genealogy and local history titles. It may be possible to borrow on fiche what is unavailable on loan. This set is also offered in Heritage Quest, a subscription database and many libraries subscribe; see if it is available locally. (Ann Arbor Public Library offers this).

Information on the NARA Microfilm rental program. (census, Revolutionary War and Freedman's Bureau records) . Census records are also available through subscription databases such as Ancestry.com and Heritage Queset; see if either is available locally. (University of Michigan offers Ancestry.com)
