from 1945

Red Violets

the arrows fade in their flight
the wings vanish toward the world of leaves
wings and leaves mingle

stars serve beauty spots
to the sky as deep as your eyes
the court of flowers cajoles itself and laughs
in a kneeling light

the chain of mirages breaks
on the kiss-encrusted cloud
a fragrant day
drops from a hump of fruits
claws release a petty theft

a green cloud dances on two legs of lightning
then the violets grow faster
children lovely as violets
dance like clouds

little ones littler than normal
converse with an invisible little one
i forget my body
the living joins the dead
the games come apart

children lovely as violets
dance like waves
they speed up their leaps
they dance with an exasperated strength and vigor
they topple the cloven and the virginal

everything turns rolls hastens
the violets redden

the day rocks in its fluidities
its wreaths of light
its imperishable leaves
the evening offers me a star
and sophie stirs the flower of dream
in the bell of the sky
