MIA1's philanthropy theme for the year is "Empowering America's Youth." The area voted on this theme because our sisters are deeply committed to working with our youth and impacting them positively. We have worked repeatedly with the Boys and Girls Clubs in Detroit and Chicago. In March of 2002, MIA1 held a day long event entitled "Sister to Sister" where sisters volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club in Detroit and facilitated various activities for the 30 adolescent girls in attendance. Activities included arts and crafts, physical education, educational exercises and a pizza dinner. The event was a huge success. In November 2002, MIA1 sponsored a similar event. ![]() During winter 2002, MIA1 also raised money for UNICEF by taking part in the "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" campaign. The funds raised were donated entirely to the global effort to eradicate polio. Participants in the 2002 campaign will have the opportunity to be part of history by helping to eradicate the disease by 2005. As an extra incentive, the area executive board awarded a $25 MIA1 Gift Certificate to the sister that raised the most money. Congratulations to Lucy Pulido from Beta Psi chapter for winning this gift certificate and raising over $29 for UNICEF!! Special thanks to all the sisters that took part in the "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" campaign! ![]()
