The last morning. We ate a mess of sausage, packed up the tent, and decided to take one last, leisurely hike before driving straight through to Michigan and Tennessee. We started out at the trailhead where Highway 12 and the Escalante River meet, but we didn't get too far before the trail went straight into the river (an elaborate sign made by a ranger with a sense of humor said, "Yup, you have to get wet!" Well, considering we woke up to frozen water bottles, jumping waist-deep into the Escalante River sounded a bit too adventurous for our little morning constitutional. Instead we drove up to one of Utah's nicest patches of slickrock and wandered around, searching for a nice rock to commemorate the trip. After our slickrock stroll, we said goodbye to Escalante. Back to surreality! ....And time to plan for next spring. Mark your calendars!
