11/28/03 - PHILIP ANSELMO Slams DAMAGEPLAN: 'They're Not Doing Anything Different' Ex-PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo has slammed his former bandmates for "not doing anything different" with their new band DAMAGEPLAN and has one again reiterated the fact that he has no desire of ever returning to his previous group. Speaking to AbsolutMetal about his current band SUPERJOINT RITUAL, Anselmo said, "I want SUPERJOINT RITUAL to be everyfuckin'thing that people maybe missed in PANTERA. Because I knew that, you know, PANTERA, not to talk about 'um, because I'm not going to, but if itdefinitely a genre of music that changed my life forever. This is where I've wanted to be for so long, musically, you know, 'cause we've been writing SUPERJOINT shit for oh god, since '93, and you know, long time coming, man. I mean to fuckin' be with them, with this fuckin' band for damn sure."

When asked if the previously announced DOWN acoustic album and DVD will ever come out, Anselmo said, "As long as we're entrapped with Elektra Records, which we seem to be, I'm not doing another fucking thing for Elektra Records unless they...they'd have to promise me...a lot of money, real fuckin' quick, and a lot of promotion. And their gonna have to do better than promises, I want it fuckin' so to the fuckin' T, contracted to where they don't have the upper hand on the band. As they have in the past...I I ain't doing nothing for Elektra Records 'cause they ain't done nothin' for me but fuckin' waste my time. Aside from the other band which I ain't ever doin' nothin' with again...and I don't want to talk about it.

11/28/03 - Philip Anselmo Interview by Absolut Metal
11/28/03 - Ex-PANTERA Drummer: 'PHILIP ANSELMO Was Afraid Of Success'

Ex-PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul recently spoke to Revolver magazine about the circumstances that led to the group's demise two years after the release of their critically acclaimed "Reinventing The Steel" CD.

"With the last couple of PANTERA records, we kept getting more and more narrow-minded because of Phil," Vinnie said. "He didn't want to experiment or take any chances, and it was like being in a tube that was getting to be so small you couldn't even breathe. Personally, I think the dude was afraid of"I did everything I could to get the guy squared away so he could have a good time. We had already agreed to take six months to a year off anyway, because we had been doing this for 12 goddamn years and we needed a break. But next thing I know, he's off doing DOWN with [PANTERA bassist] Rex [Brown] and talking shit about us.

"Phil has no respect for anything and just perceives other people to be less than he is. After hearing him talking so much shit, I looked at [brother/PANTERA guitarist Dimebag DAccording to Vinnie, Anselmo kept many things away from his bandmates, including his appetite for heroin. It wasn't until 1996, when he overdosed after a hometown show in Dallas that the rest of PANTERA learned of affinity for the needle.

"It was about 118 degrees outside that day, so I thought the dude had passed out from heat exhaustion," Vinnie said. "He was blue and medics were hitting him in the chest. Then they're saying it's a heroin overdose, and I'm like, 'Dude, you gotta be kidding!' Because he used to preach antidrugs back in the day."

"[In the years that followed Phil's overdose] he was very private about [the fact that he was using again]. I don't know if he was using the whole time or what, but it got to the point where I didn't know which Phil was gonna show up to the gig. One night he would walk in and be a fucking animal. The next night, I'd walk backstage and he'd be lying in the corner and he'd say he was tired. I will never take anything away from that dude from when he was at the top of his game, but where he's at right now, I think he's much less than subpar at what he does. I have a hard time watching him when I see him on MTV talking about SUPERDOPE RITUAL, or whatever they're called, and he can't keep his fucking eyes open."

Vinnie Paul's interview with Revolver appears in the magazine's February 2004 issue, out on the newsstands now.

(Thanks: Revolver)

11/28/03 - There has always been a kinship between strippers and Pantera. Gaggles of exotic dancers have shed their clothes to songs like COWBOYS FROM HELL and a Russian stripper stationed in South Florida calls herself Pantera. Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul are so obsessed with adult clubs themselves that they started their own Dallas nudie joint, the Clubhouse.

So it makes sense that when Dime and Vinnie wanted feedback on some new music they recorded with their post-Pantera band, Damageplan, they reached out to some real professionals: They picked up six dancers from the Dallas gentleman's"These girls were all 17 and 18 and had some big ol' jumbo fake Texas titties on," gloats Vinnie, sitting inside a dark record company office that's lit by a single candle. "We put the CD on, the shots of liquor are flowing, and the girls are jumping up and down, going crazy. Next thing you know, they're all fucking naked and we're having a good time. But the bottom line is they loved the music. I expected them to turn their noses up because they're 15 years younger than me, but they were like, 'This kicks fucking ass. Let's take our clothes off and do some shots.'"

It was a pivotal moment for Vinnie and Dime, and one of their first moves toward reclaiming the heavy metal throne they abdicated two years ago when Pantera went on hold. It also signaled the completion of a stressful transformation that began with their seperation from Pantera's drug-dazed frontman, Phil Anselmo, continued with the recruitment of new singer, Patrick Lachman and peaked with the completion of Damageplan's debut album, NEW FOUND POWER.

NEW FOUND POWER taps into familiar sounds and grooves and enhances them with fresh textures, styles, and vocals that alternately rip and soothe. Many songs grind like Pantera's FAR BEYOND DRIVEN, but some wouldn't sound out of place on mainstream alternative radio. Unlike many of the Nineties metal bands that ignore mainstream rock radio, Damageplan pay close attention to what's out there and assimilate it into their own caustic aesthetic.(Great, they're going to sound like Nickelback) Open-minded Pantera "We wanted to maintain the integrity and hard edge that we always had with Pantera but at the same time not forget that there's another side of music," explains Vinnie. "Plus, bands have been ripping off Pantera for so long, we thought we'd take a little back from what we hear going on today."

NEW FOUND POWER may be more commercial than anything by Pantera, but even without the pugnacious Anselmo, Vinnie and Dime are still some crazy motherfuckers. They're not as young as they were when they started Pantera 21 years ago, but they still have the mentality of hungry, rebellious teenagers and they can still party harder than most rockers half their age. In other words, if you try to go shot-for-shot with them, make sure you're near a toilet and have no major plans for the next day.

"I'll be a fucking 17-year old until the day I die," Vinnie boasts. "The day I get old is the day I let myself get old. I'm not married, I don't have any fucking kids, I fucking love going out, I love interacting with people and most of all I fucking love making music."

For almost two years, Vinnie's greatest passion was absent from his life. Pantera were on their last legs after their completion of their 2000 studio album, REINVENTING THE STEEL, and he anding so small you couldn't even breathe. Personally, I think the dude was afraid of success. He wanted to be such an underground icon that the bigger Pantera got, the more he didn't want to be involved."

For a while, Anselmo's bandmates sacrified their ideals to placate their singer. Not only did they narrow their musical boundaries, they agreed to put their lives on hold while Anselmo immersed himself in various extreme-metal side projects. Eventually, in the fall of 2001, Anselmo called Vinnie and threatened to quit Pantera if he wasn't allowed to spend the next year working with his other bands. He also asked Vinnie to help convince the band's label to allow him to release records with other companies so he could get the music out of his system. "I did everything I could to get the guy squared away so he could have a good time," gripes Vinnie "We had already agreed to take six months to a year off anyway, because we had been doing this for 12 goddamn years and we needed a break. But next thing I know, he's off doing Down with Rex and talking shit about us."

While working on Down, Anselmo agreed to stay in touch with the rest of Pantera through meetings and conference calls. But he blew off every scheduled appointment. Then, during last year's Ozzfest, he regularly bad-mouthed Pantera from the stage. "Phil has no respect for anything and just perceives other people to be less than he is," Vinnie fumes "After hearing him talking so much shit, I looked at Dime and went, 'You know what? I think this might be the end of this. We better start doing something, because the only thing we know how to do is play music.'"

Anselmo's aloofness was typical. During his 13 years with Pantera, the singer hid many things from his bandmates--including his appetite for heroin. It wasn't until 1996, when he overdosed after a hometown show in Dallas, that the rest of Pantera learned of his affinity for the needle.

"It was about 118 degrees outside that day, so I thought the dude had passed out from heat exhaustion," Vinnie says "He was blue and medics were hitting him in the chest. Then they're saying it's a heroin overdose, and I'm like, 'Dude, you gotta be kidding!' Because he used to preach anti-drugs back in the day."

After the near-fatality, Anselmo assured his bandmates that he was done with smack and they believed him. But as time passed, there were more and more signs that he was using again. "He was very private about it," says Vinnie "I don't know if he was using the whole time or what, but it got to the point where I didn't know which Phil was gonna show up to the gig. One night he would walk in a be a fucking animal. The next night, I'd walk backstage and he'd be lying in the corner and he'd say he was tired. I wAnyone who has seen Vinnie or Dime late at night might find it hypocritical for them to reprimand their former singer for taking drugs, seeing as they routinely drink their asses off. The difference, says Vinnie, is that he and Dime are in control of their consumption. He admits that, by conventional terms, they're alcoholics, but he insists that drinking doesn't get in the way of their creativity or their career.

"I don't wake up looking for a bottle," Vinnie says "I drink at night,a dn when I'm done, I drink all the water I can, and it washes the alcohol right out of my system. The thing with drug addicts is, when the high runs out, they need to get high again. When they wake up, they're not looking for a glass of water, they're looking for dope. And most ofem end up dead."

The birth of Damageplan wasn't easy and the group's infancy was filled with growing pains. Before they even wrote a note, Vinnie and Dime decided not to write music that sounded like Pantera. But it was like trying to turn a tiger into a vegetarian. "Everything we did fucking sucked and it was no fun," says Vinnie "We were trying to be people we weren't and we were writing these songs that didn't feel any good. Finally I said, 'You know what? You can take Eddie and Alex out of Van Halen, buOnce they had written a batch of songs, Damageplan started to search for a singer. They auditioned many musicians, but none came close to capturing the power and range they were after. Their friend Lachman was never even a consideration.

Dime had met the future Damageplan singer in Los Angeles at the 2000 NAMM show--an annual music products convention--soon after Lachman started playing guitar for former Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford. A Priest fan, Dime bonded with the axeman. At the time, Lachman was seeing a girl in Dallas, so whenever he was in town to see her, he'd drop by the Clubhouse. One night Dime confided in Lachman that he and Vinnie were working on a new band and played the guitarist some rough tracks. "I listened to it and hired their long-time Dallas friend Bobzilla. "He's a goddamn kick-ass tattoo artist," Vinnie enthuses "He's jammed with a lot of local bands and he really holds the low end down. We didn't want someone who everyone knew, and we figured we needed a monster on bass, so since we can't get Godzilla, why not hire Bobzilla?"

Going into the recording of NEW FOUND POWER, Vinnie and Dime knew the world would be wa Joining the fun were Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor and Zakk Wylde. Taylor, who sings on "Fuck You," first heard the song when his side band, Stone Sour, was performing in Dallas and Dime hopped on the tour bus to play him some Damageplan. Taylor was so blown away he arranged to send Dime a tape of him singing on part of the song.

Wydle's contributions were just as spontaneous. A longtime friend, Zakk swung by the studio to hear some Damagaplan songs before heading back to L. A. As soon as he heard "ReboThat's the kind of emtional, somewhat irrational reaction Damageplan can cause. Sure, the music burns with brutality; yeah, if you sent some of the lyrics to your ex-girlfriend, you'd be hit with a restraining order before the album reached the final track. But the energy is infectious and ultimately positive.

For Vinnie, the past two years have been stressful and aggravating, and he still burns with contempt for Anselmo, but he's learned something from the self-destructive behavior of his former frontman

11/24/03 - DIMEBAG DARRELL: 'PANTERA Is Officially Over'

Former PANTERA guitarist Dimebag Darrell recently spoke to the U.K.'s Rock Sound magazine about the current status of the band that is widely considered to be one of the most influential American metal acts of the '90s.

When asked point-blank if PANTERA is officially over, Dimebag said, "Oh yeah, it's been officially over since our lead singer [Philip Anselmo] started announcing it from stages across the United States." Dimebag went on to explain that "[Anselmo] threatened it before but when he started announcing it in the press and from onstage, that was when it became official. He never had the decency to talk to us about it. Nobody would return our calls so me and [PANTERA drummer] Vinnie [Paul] just sat at home not knowing what the fuck was going on."

Despite all the obvious bad blood, Dimebag admited "we're not ashamed of a fuckin' thing we've done. It was a great ride and we wanted it to last forever. It didn't but we're back with [our new band] DAMAGEPLAN and we're ready to kick some muthafuckin' dick!"

DAMAGEPLAN, which features Darrell, Vinnie, singer Patrick Lachman (former HALFORD/DIESEL MACHINE guitarist) and bassist Bobzilla, will release their debut album, "New Found Power", on February 10 through Elektra Records. The group expect to begin playing select shows in January, with a full-scale North American tour to follow shortly after the album's release.

Vocalist Phil Anselmo says that he is done with PANTERA and he intends to focus all his time and energy on SUPERJOINT RITUAL. "There was a lot of business with Warner Bros. and this and that DOWN and PANTERA and this and that, and etc. etc." Anselmo was quoted as saying by MetalIndex.com. "Whatever. Pretty much what I'm doing here is I'm sticking with SUPERJOINT, and I'm not doing fuckin' anything else. This is where I'm most comfortable and this it the type of music that I wanna do, you know?"

Anselmo says that he is proud of what PANTERA achieved and is also proud that they pulled the plug rather than faded away. "If you think about it, PANTERA never went away until we personally said, 'Fuck it'."

Asked if he sees patching up differences and rejoining DOWN or PANTERA, Anselmo said, "Never say never... [but] not right now."

8/15/02- Some people say death is just a part of life.... But it becomes a cold reality when it hits one of your own. Dave was a true brother to us. We had the pleasure of knowing him for years before the world knew him as Dave "Stage" Williams from Drowning Pool. We are proud to say that in life he was the same person now as we knew back then. All the success, platinum records, etc never changed him. He was always the same big hearted, fun loving Dave, never a rock star... Just Dave. He loved music and most of all he loved his family, friends and fans. It's impossible to say with words how much fun it was to hang with Dave. He was the full package! His wit, charisma and drive to kick ass will be deeply missed by all.....

Dear Dave.....
With a heart the size of Texas
forever your spirit will shine through
in our loving memories of you

Our heartfelt condolences and love go out to CJ, Mike, & Stevie, our Drowning Pool Brothers, Mr & Mrs Williams, Lorie, and everyone in the Drowning Pool family.
