Chad was never actually my student, but more my teacher. He worked for me as a work-study student during a semester in which I had undertaken to write an empirical paper about trade in the Middle East. I knew nothing about the Middle East, and not much more about econometrics. Chad, to my good fortune, happened to know a lot about the Middle East, and either was adept or became adept at manipulating data and running regressions. I learned a lot that term, much of it from him. I did not learn econometrics. I left that to him.
