Questions about administrative stuff for Econ 340, Section 100, Winter 2018 Apr 18: I was wondering how the questions would be distributed for the final exam. Will the final month's portion constitute a major part or will all 23 lectures be equally important? A: As I said in class, posted on the slides, and explained on the course website, it will cover all 23 lectures equally. I don't mind your not attending class, but you really must pay attention to the available course materials. Mar 24: Is there a particular reason why you might not want us to use graphic calculators for the ECON 340 exam? I don't see how any of its advanced features would help me with any of the problems introduced so far. I also find it a hassle to keep borrowing scientific calculators from my friends. A: As I understand it, graphing calculators allow you to store text, which could therefore be used to store answers for the test. That's the reason. There is no reason that you need a scientific calculator. Nothing on the exam will require more than simple arithmetic, so a very inexpensive calculator will be sufficient. Many are available for less then $10, even less than $5. Mar 7: I was wondering if you knew how the exam grades would be weighted yet. After reviewing the answers, I believe that I made some stupid mistakes and misread a few of the questions and I just wanted to make sure that my grade will not suffer too badly. Thank you! A: I'm not sure what you mean by weighted. The points for each question appear on the exam, and the weights for each exam appear on the syllabus (30% for each midterm). Is there more you're looking for? Feb 3: I would like to ask that do we have any specific International Econ terms sheet that wrtie something we need to remember for the Exam 1? There are too many terms in slides and it is impossible to remember all of them. A: No, I don't have such a list. If you pay attention to what the terms mean when they are introduced, you should be able to remember most of them. It's not like memorizing numbers. Jan 24: The required book for purchase was the 7th edition International Economics book by Gerber. However, all of the required reading pages on the course syllabus reference the 5th and 6th editions only. As a result, I do not know what the necessary pages are because we often skip some of the chapter reading. For example, Chapter 4 was pages 63-65 and 68-73 but page 63-65 in my edition is the end of Chapter 3 summary and review problems. Please get back to me as soon as possible, so I do not fall behind. A: I only just got a copy of the 7th edition, and hope to add the pages for it today. (I'd asked for it more than a month ago.) Jan 9: I am in your Econ 340 class and was wondering where I can find the class reading schedule and also extra practice problems to succeed in the exams. A: The reading schedule is in the syllabus. Practice problems are in the Study Questions for each lecture and there are old exams on the Exam Information page. All of these are on the course website that you can reach through Canvas or go directly to http://www-personal.umich.edu/~alandear/courses/340/340.html Dec 29: Is it ok to buy the international edition of the textbook ? The content should be the same but I'd like to double check with you. A: If the content is the same, then it is certainly OK. However, since I will not have that edition myself, the page numbers that I list on the syllabus will not be correct. (Actually, I'm still waiting for a copy of the 7th edition, so I haven't posted the page numbers for that yet.)
