A Creche from the Dominican Republic

These nativity figures were made by artisans in a homemade cottage industry in the Dominican Republic. Figure forms are made with faces and hands. The clothing, which is remarkably detailed, is made by imprinting real laces and various fabrics onto large sheets of a warm, dyed, soft, pliable mixture, which is then appropriately placed around the figures, and becomes hard as it dries.
