Ahhhh... day off
Friday, May 4, 2007

It's been two weeks since my last full day off, so in the interest of letting my legs repair themselves, and since this is (supposedly) an easy week, I have taken today off. I have worked pretty hard this week, actually, even though I probably shouldn't have: I ran hard on Tuesday with Matt on the track, rode hard Wednesday afternoon, and then ran fairly hard with my track kids yesterday as well. It hasn't been a high mileage week, but the intensity has been higher than anything I've done so far this year.

With all this free time, I finally managed to complete one of my ongoing projects: my coaching website. I expect to receive my USAT certification any day now, so it's time to start marketing myself as a coach. Hopefully I will be able to sign a few athletes for the summer, and then word of mouth will lead to further clients.

Go big or go home

The time has come: my first official week of speedwork for the season. I've already strated things off in typical style, crushing my legs over the weekend and then putitng in some hard (but controlled) 200s and 400s today. The rest of the week is going to be pretty crazy, too. I'm ok with that - I've been waiting for a chance to really step it up and train hard.

Tomorrow, for example, will be pretty sweet: a bike-run-bike brick at the track with my training partner Matt, and then another run in the afternoon. It'll be doubles the rest of the week except for Saturday, when I get to enjoy a day off from running. I'm not only hitting the track again, but I've also started to work my way towards 50 miles of running per week, which I will hold for most of the summer.

Too busy!
Thursday, May 10, 2007

Coaching has officially taken over my entire life. This whole week has been insane because of things surrounding our first meet (which happened yesterday in mostly pouring rain). It's going to be nice to get home tomorrow at a little after 5, instead of 6:30... or 8:30.

So far, so good in the first week of training: my track workouts went smoothly, and aside from not training at all yesterday, I'm pretty much right where I want to me. My IT band isn't bothering me too much (yet?) and my legs seem to be holding up well otherwise.

150 hours. I reached this milestone today - 150 hours of training so far this year - a day later than last year, but I've finally caught up to my 2006 training hours. This bodes well, especially because my hours are more balanced this year: 80/70 bike to run as opposed to 73/77. I didn't ride as much as I wanted this week, but I think I've got myself on track (and getting some work done ahead of time will help with that too). It's simply going to be a matter of keeping my legs from falling off. This was a big weekend, and I'm going into my tweo back-to-back run speedwork days starting tomorrow.

Next weekend's going to be pretty sweet, too... it'll be a training weekend on the Powerman Ohio course, getting familiar with those hills. Hopefully some other dudes will show up for that.

Nothing to give
Tuesday, May 15, 2007

My legs are shattered right now. It's been a long time since I felt this shelled. I went out on an easy hour recovery ride this morning, riding with my training partner on his commute to work, and I could not generate power at all. I'm glad the wind wasn't worse than it was, because I would have been in serious trouble. Thankfully I have a day off the bike tomorrow, which should help me recover for Thursday's tempo workout. I'm trying not to think about running, though... no day off in sight there.

Wicked weekend
Monday, May 21, 2007

My legs managed to recover from last week... just in time for a trip to Malabar Farm, the site for this year's Long Course national championship. I spent Friday afternoon through Sunday morning training on the course, with an emphasis on familiarizing myself with the climbs on both the run and the bike courses. To say that it will be a tough race is a vast understatement, but it has the potential to be a very good race, too. Running and riding in the hills are strengths for me, so with the right training, I hope to do pretty well on September 30th.

This is an easy week, which will give me a chance to relax a bit and get some other things done. My intensity is mostly front-loaded, with two track workouts at the beginning of the week, so I will be able to hit next week hard.

(Not much of a) Day off
Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Days off from training are sadly far from restful. I need to figure out how to fix that. I spent most of the day on my feet, in the sun - my team had another track meet (which we won, of course!) so we were out in the open all afternoon. I'm shelled, and I didn't even run a single step today! Time for some hardcore sleep.

Hello sinus my old friend
Saturday, May 26, 2007

I guess it's about that time of year - time for my annual sinusitis. I woke up this morning feeling pressure behind my eyes and nose, and since it was raining anyway, I decided the prudent thing to do would be to bag my ride for the day. I'll ride tomorrow after a good night's sleep, regardless of weather, and see how things go. I did manage to get some running in though, and didn't feel too bad during the workout.

Still no solid leads for a job this fall. I've had some nibbles, but nothing major yet. This is getting to be a bit alarming. I'll be more worried if I don't have anything by July, but I'm getting pretty antsy as it is.

Feeling hamstrung
Wednesday, May 30, 2007

My sinuses have cleared out, so breathing is no longer a problem... but now my legs have gotten very tight. It's a struggle to get out of bed in the morning, and I'm not really sure why, because I'm not doing anything my body's not done before. I don't know if my legs are reacting this way because I'm also trying to acclimate to the heat, or because I'm occasionally dehydrated, or because they just don't like me. Whatever the case may be, I'm forging on, tight hamstrings or not. I am going to be fast this year.

I've also been looking for some track races (all-comers meets and the like) that I can jump into over the summer. I got a new pair of spikes the other day, and I'm aching to use them in a race. I think I've found some 3000-5000m races I can do, and hopefully more will pop up as the summer goes on. If all goes well, perhaps I will lower my 5K PR again this year.
