Hello again! Thursday, August 30, 2007 Once again, my summer went very well except for one key ingredient - training! (Well, and blog updates....) I didn't race and barely trained for the last five weeks or so of summer, mostly due to relocation-related fatigue and lack of time. I know I probably could have trained, but that would have left me wiped out and backlogged on everything else. I am getting back into the swing of things now, but my racing will be interesting this fall, having fallen short on my grand master plan for training. Now that I am settled into a new house in a new city with a new job (woohoo!), I can get back to all the things I have been neglecting for the past month and a half. Training is going to pick up again, especially now that I commute to work and have big blocks of time in which I have nothing to do), I can start blogging again, I can take care of basic errands like shopping and dry-cleaning, etc. Life has been good, but hectic, and I am relieved that I can finally relax this weekend and establish a routine.
The new job, by the by, is a PE teaching position at the McLean School of Maryland (in Potomac), and the new house is a few miles away in Rockville. I'm really excited about the job and coaching, although living in the D.C. area is taking some adjustment. For anyone who has not driven on the beltway, it's pretty ridiculous. I'll be heading out on my first group ride this weekend to find out what the roads are like around here... hopefully I can figure out some good places to ride.
Camptastic
Sorry for the lack of updates - this has been my first full day off since I got to camp, so I finally have some time to sit down and take care of some business. My training has been going ok, but it's pretty hard to get in everything I want to do - I have to get up at the crack of dawn to train before breakfast, and then once in a while I get to train in the evenings as well. I'm going to just do as much as I can manage each week, get my quality sessions in, and see what happens. With any luck (and a lot of discipline) I will survive the summer in decent shape to start peaking for my fall races.
First 5K of the year My first road 5K of the year went fairly well today - a race report has already been posted, and photos are coming later this week (or maybe next week). I got 2nd overall, and won a pair of free running shoes. Gotta love not having to pay for another pair of shoes until the fall! These new ones should get me through the end of this summer's long training season. My legs are feeling like crap these days. It's been a struggle to get out and run at a decent pace. I have also had to battle a bunch of schedule conflicts that have kept me from logging the miles I needed this week - I barely ran more than last week's recovery mileage. I'll have to step it up next week, which will be tough with the travelling and adjusting to a new schedule, but I gotta do it. I have no good excuse for not running close to 50 miles a week at this point, even if some of the miles are slow.
Some of what's been keeping me busy is good news, though. I have a video conference with a private school tomorrow morning - this is my second interview with them, which is a great sign, and I'm excited for the chance to prove myself worthy to them. Hopefully, they will invite me down to visit the school and perhaps even offer me a job. Don't want to count my chickens before they hatch, obviously, but I have a pretty good feeling about this right now. My fingers are crossed... it would be great to finally know what I'll be doing and not have to worry about it all summer long. More updates on this will follow.
