Adric's How to Make a Character
Ok, the first things you need are some scrap paper, a pencil, a character
sheet of the appropriate era, four six-sided dice, and one 10-sided
die.
Once you have all of the above supplies, you are ready to start. You
will find that most of the linked words in the following text link to
a definition file, for those unfamiliar
with the strangeness of the Call of Cthulhu world.
- Roll the four six-sided dice seven (7) times. Each time you
roll, you should ignore the value of the lowest die. These rolls will be
put--in any order you like--into:
- Next, roll two six-sided dice two (2) times. Add six to each
roll, then put them--again, in the order you like--into:
- Roll one (1) ten-sided die. This is your Money Stat.
- Calculate the automatic stats.
- Choose your occupation. If you have access to the Call of Cthulhu
basic book, or a book with additional occupations, you can try to find
your occupation. Note that many "unusual" vocations aren't listed
anywhere. Once you have chosen an occupation, put a little mark on the
character sheet next to each of the listed skills. Do not fill in
the little box next to the skill.
- Ok, now it's time for skills. Keep in mind that you may
not increase a skill rating to higher than 70.
- Multiply your EDU stat by 20. This is the number of points you have to
allocate into your occupational skills (the ones you marked off in the
previous step). Remember, these points may ONLY be used in your
occupational skills.
- Multiply your INT stat by 10. These are your Hobby skill points. You
can put these points anywhere, but keep in mind the "not greater than 70"
rule.
- You have a rough framework of your character's stats.
You can now determine what age you character should be. Note that
characters older than 45 will have penalties assigned to STR, CON, DEX,
and/or APP. The character's age can be increased through the study
program:
- Increase your age by 10. You may do this as many times as
you like. (Keep in mind the >45 age penalties) This will give your
character:
Age+10 | EDU+1 | Know+5 | Own
Lang.+5 | 20 Occupational Skill Points |
---|
- Increase your age by 1. You may do this at most 5 times. For
this increase, you must roll 1D100, and roll under (INT times 5). If
you succeed, you get:
Age+1 | EDU+1 | Know+5 | Own
Lang.+5 | 10 Hobby Skill Points |
---|
If you fail your roll, you get:
- If you find that your character's stats do not fit your concept of him
or her, then you can trade in some of your attribute points. Take two
points from any attribute (or one point from two attributes), and add one
point to any other attribute. Note that some statistics are directly
derived from attributes, and recalculate accordingly.
Example: You have a CON of 14, a DEX of 15, a SIZ of 18, and an EDU of 16.
You can trade so that you have a DEX of 16, a SIZ of 17, and an EDU of 15
(and still have the CON of 14). This will have the effects of
increasing your Dodge by 5% and decreasing Age and HP by 1,
your Know and Own Language by 5%, and your Occupation Skill Points by
20.
- Buy equipment appropriate to the era. Consider anything that costs 5
times your Yearly Income to have been completely unattainable during the
character's lifetime up to this point.
- Congratulations! You have a Call of Cthulhu character.
