In addition to my research, I serve as the Chair of the Educational Studies Program within Michigan's School of Education. In this role, I am responsible for the day-to-day management of the school's largest academic unit.

Beyond the university, my professional activities have included various editorial responsibilities as well as service to professional organizations. From 2001-2005, my wife and colleague, Joanne Carlisle, and I served as co-editors of Learning Disabilities Research & Practice (LDRP), the official journal of the Division of Learning Disabilities, within the Council for Exceptional Children. LDRP publishes papers focused on a range of issues related to children with learning disabilities, including reading, math, written language, psychosocial issues, and family and school support. To learn more about the journal, visit the publisher's web site.

In addition, I serve as a consulting editor for a book series for Guilford Press, titled Challenges in Language and Literacy Development. The purpose of this series is to integrate interdisciplinary perspectives on language and literacy with empirically based components for promoting effective learning outcomes in diverse students. To learn more about the series and the books published to date, visit the Guilford web site.

I am a member of several professional organizations devoted to the study of child development, educational issues, and atypical children, including the American Educational Research Association, the Council for Exceptional Children, the Society for Research on Child Development, and the International Academy for Research on Learning Disabilities (IARLD). For the latter organization, I served from 2001-2005 as a Vice President, with responsibility for recruiting new members. For information about IARLD, visit its web site (http://www.iarld.net/).

I have also been active in the Division for Learning Disabilities (DLD), a branch of the Council for Exceptional Children. I served for several years as chair of the division's research committee, and I was founding editor of Current Practice Alerts, a series of pamphlets designed to alert parents, teachers, and administrators about the research validity of prominent practices in the field of learning disabilities. For information about this series, visit the DLD web site (teachingld.org/ld_resources/alerts/default.htm) and click on LD Resources.
