I teach courses on individual differences in cognitive and social development, with a particular focus on the social context of children's learning. In addition, I teach a course on the theoretical and empirical foundations of the study of literacy. I also teach classes for preservice teachers on effective approaches to the inclusive education.


ED500 Foundations of Literacy

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the information and tools they need to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of alternative theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing literacy and literacy acquisition. Students will also gain familiarity with major milestones and processes in literacy development. In addition, they will develop an appreciation of the challenges to literacy development faced by selected special populations, as well as a set of principles and general approaches to meeting those challenges.

ED735 Research Issues in Special Education

This course provides an analysis of historical and contemporary trends in theory and research in the field of special education, with particular emphasis on language and learning disabilities. Students evaluate alternative theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing atypical children and engage in the analytic reading of selected research in the field of special education. The major topics covered will be: alternative theoretical perspectives on "high incidence" disabilities; general methodological issues in the study of atypical children; research trends in the study of atypical patterns of development in oral language, reading, written language, math, and social behavior.

ED736 Atypical Cognitive and Social Development

This course provides an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of alternative theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing atypical patterns of development, with a particular emphasis on cognitive and social development. Students gain familiarity with major research findings regarding atypical patterns of cognitive and social development. In addition, we analysze the research literature related to the impact of atypical development on informal and formal learning activities, and vice versa. Students are encouraged to develop their own personal perspective regarding the causes and consequences of atypical development.
