Slides for Talks I've Given
Note that these slides don't (and weren't intended to) stand on their own; they may be a reference, but I didn't read from the slides in the talks, so a lot of what was discussed is not captured directly in these slides. If you'd like to hear the orginal talk, let me know.
LaTeX: Eh? What is it, what isn't it, who cares?
I gave this talk in the Fall of 2005 to the U of M Engineering CAEN Hotline students; it is intended as a brief introduction to the TeX and LaTeX typesetting packages. The slides can be downloaded in PDF.
Queuing and Scheduling on Compute Clusters
I gave this talk to the U of M Cluster Administrators group in January of 2006; it is intended as an overview of queuing and scheduling on compute clusters, including a overview of software, techniques, and our experiences at the Center for Advanced Computing. The slides can be downloaded in PDF.
Introduction to the Center for Advanced Computing
This is a summary of what the Center for Advanced Computing was in May 2005; much of what is in here was out of date in June 2005. For updated information contact the Center for Advanced Computing. The slides can be downloaded in PDF.
A Brief Introduction to the Center for Advanced Computing
I gave this talk in May 2006 to the Bioinformatics group at U of M; it is very focused on the mechanics of using the CAC and very specific to our local environment. The slides are available here in PDF and a video of the talk is available here in streaming Quicktime and here as a downloadable .mov file.
EITC 2006: HPC at the University of Michigan College of Engineering
I gave this talk at the 2006 Big10 Engineering IT Conference (EITC) in October 2006 at UIUC. The slides are available here in PDF.
Scheduling Jobs on Clusters
I gave this talk as part of the CAEN Staff Brownbag Lunch Seminar series on March 21, 2007. It is a brief introduction the the ideas behind job scheduling and a little bit about how we do it at the CAC. The slides are available here in PDF.
Moab, TORQUE, and Gold in a Heterogeneous, Federated Computing System at the University of Michigan
I have this talk at Moab*Con in 2009. It is a description of using Adaptive Computing's products to operate the clusters at the University of Michigan. The slides are available here in PDF.
High-Performance Computing at the University of Michigan: CIRRUS Flux
I gave this talk at U-M Dearborn in November 2011. It is a brief talk about the current state of the ORCI CIRRUS cluster Flux. The slides are available here in PDF.
Using Gold, Moab, and Torque to Run a Campus-wide Allocation-based HPC Service
I gave this talk at Moab*Con in 2012. It is a description of how we run our allocation-based high-performance computing cluster with Adaptive Computing's products and is a nice contrast to the 2009 talk on the same topic; these show the advancements we made and how we made them. The slides are available here in PDF.
Flux: The State of the Cluster
I gave this talk at the University of Michigan CyberInfrastructure Days in 2012. It is a description of where the campus high-performance computing cluster is in mid-Autumn 2012, how we got here, and where it is going. The slides are available here in PDF.
A Gentle Introduction to Git at CAEN
I gave a talk on using Git at CAEN at a CAEN Brownbag Lunch Talk in January 2013. The slides are available here in PDF, the handouts are available here in PDF and here in HTML, and the original Emacs Org-Mode file and the one image are here and here.
