EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
- Ph. D. in Architecture, Aug. 2004
University of Michigan
- Dissertation: "An Exploration of Protean Elements as Representations in a
Computer Aid for Design." This dissertation examines a possible scheme for
representing architectural elements ("wall," "room," "window," etc.). Issues
considered include the justification for such elements (based on psychology
and design research), generation of graphics data, extraction of data for
analyses, deliberate avoidance of "model correctness," treatment of joints
between elements, and the relationship between conceptual- and product-level
elements.
- Minor Area of Specialization: Cognitive Psychology
- Advisor: Jim Turner
- Master of Science in Architecture, Dec. 1996
University of Michigan
- Completed graduate-level coursework focusing on Design Process and Methods.
Study included subjects in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science (User Interface, AI, and Advanced AI courses) and Psychology (courses and independent study on Cognition and Thought).
- Master of Architecture, Aug. 1990
Iowa State University
- Thesis: "Demonstration of an Abstract Data Type for Gradual Definition, Refinement, and Computer-Graphic Representation of Architectural Elements."
This thesis presented an early attempt to represent high-level architectural elements by assembling low-level drafting entities and assigning behavior to them.
- While a graduate student, completed all courses required for an Undergraduate
Minor in Computer Science.
- Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, May 1986
Iowa State University
