Beyond Standard Model Physics with Neutrino Driven Sources Workshop

@ MIT, 1/15-1/16

Goal and Background

The goal of this workshop is to bring theorists and experimentalists together to discuss and elucidate the physics of accelerator-driven, isotope-based neutrino sources.  We will concentrate on IsoDAR as the prime upcoming example, and then will consider future possibilities.

IsoDAR can simply be described as a high intensity source of nuebar from 0-16 MeV. Nominally, the plan is to pair IsoDAR with the KamLAND detector. The two main IsoDAR physics possibilities outlined so far are covered at arXiv:1205.4419 (searching for nuebar disappearance at short-baseline via inverse beta decay) and arXiv:1307.5081 (nuebar-electron elastic scattering as a measurement of the weak mixing angle and/or to search for non-standard neutrino interactions). We are thinking of other physics possibilities and hope you will help come with some ideas. Enhancing the physics case for accelerator-driven sources such as IsoDAR is the main impetus for the workshop. A few thoughts for now:

-IsoDAR as a source for coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering.

-IsoDAR events in Super-K, perhaps as a source for understanding supernova (nuebar-induced IBD) efficiencies at low energies.

-IsoDAR at DUNE (neutral current neutrino-nucleus scattering).

-Changing IsoDAR's target to Aluminum so that we have a source of nue, rather than nuebar.

-IsoDAR as a source for a neutrino trident production search.

-Using IsoDAR to inform reactor-based experiments.

IMPORTANT: We have created an editable google document here, to collect ideas and thoughts on IsoDAR physics. Please feel free to add to this document (any time, including now) as you see fit!

Location

The workshop will be at MIT, Building 26, 4th floor, Kolker Room. We have also reserved 26-528 (5th floor of Building 26, room 528) for breakout sessions. Please find an MIT campus here; Building 26 is “26” on the map. The Kendall/MIT subway stop is very close to “E38”. There is cafeteria-style food in “32” and “76”. There are many restaurants along Main St, among other streets.

Transportation and Lodging

We assume that most of you will be flying to Boston's Logan International Airport. If you surf the web for low fares and are tempted to save a few bucks by flying to Manchester, NH and renting a car - don't do it. Manchester is far away. You won't save money or time. And, don't even consider renting a car from Logan. Use public transportation or take a cab.

The formal name for Boston's public transportation system may be the MBTA, but locals call it "the T." This system operates subway lines, bus lines, and other public tranportation systems around Boston and Cambridge area. The closest subway station to MIT is Kendall MIT on the Red Line. You can find the subway map, schedules, and fares at the MBTA's website. If you plan to use mass transit, you can purchase a Charlie Ticket at the machines located at each stop.

Many people will arrive to the MIT campus via the Kendall MIT T-stop. As you exit the subway, you will be on Main Steet, right across from the Coop bookstore. If you are facing the Coop bookstore, you need to travel left (West on Main Street) to get to MIT.

We have an official room block at the Porter Square Hotel (~20min by subway, call the hotel and mention the MIT conference):

The group code is PHYS18.

We also recommend:

Free Point Hotel (~20 min by subway)

Food at the Meeting

Light food and coffee will be provided. A dinner on 1/15 will tentatively be at Naco Taco. If you can attend the dinner, please let us know by entering your name in the doodle here. We will get lunch as a group on 1/15 and 1/16.

Internet Access

The wireless network “MIT Guest”, accessible by anyone, is a fine option.
