Demographic Profile Maps of
Washtenaw County in Relation to
Education- and Community-Based
Nonprofits

The following 15 color gradient and dot density maps are of the greater Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Dexter areas (These comprise the only areas currently with self-identified education- and community-based nonprofits in Washtenaw County.).  These maps highlight the distribution of various groups that might be targeted by these nonprofit organizations as either potential contributors or beneficiaries/recipients of the nonprofit programs and services.  As such targeting would likely involve individuals or groups, rather than an intangible percentage of the population, the maps illustrate the distribution of the actual number of people rather than a distribution based upon relative percentages.  For instance, a nonprofit organization in Ann Arbor would be more interested in knowing the actual size of the target population they wish to serve than simply the percentage of this target population in relation to the overall population at-large.  This is because the actual number will allow the nonprofit organization to better predict the demand of the target population for its services and also allow the organization to understand the amount of services it needs to supply in order to meet these demands.  For example, knowing that the actual number of single, female head-of-household families with children is 45 within a particular area would be of more use to a nonprofit targeting this population group than knowing that this group simply comprises 10 percent of the total population in that same area.  We have, however, included below 2 color gradiant maps that exhibit a potential target population by a percentage of the total population in order for viewers of this webpage to see the differences between these and the color gradient maps using actual population group numbers.  These two particular maps are shown below with the corresponding actual group number maps pertaining to the distribution of median market value of residences, and the distribution of children under five years of age.  Interesting enough, there does not appear to be much differences between these maps.

It should also be noted that the maps below illustrating the dot density of particular population groups have been uniformly derived by having each dot equate to 100 members within the specified group, with one exception.  This exception pertains to the map of the distribution of married families with children and single, male or female head-of-household, families with children.  In this case, each dot equates to 10 of these family types, respectively.  This was necessary due to the low number of these families in the area.  For example, if the dots were left to each equal 100 families of these types within the area, only one to two dots of each kind would appear.

Overall, we hope that these demographic profile maps will help viewers to understand the population groups that exist and their distribution within the area of interest.
