SIMPLE THEMATIC MAP USING ARCVIEW

Open ArcView

New|View

Click on the + button "add theme"

Navigate to .shp files:

c:\\esri\esridata\world

click on cntry94.shp, for example.

Note now that there is, to the left of the view area, a small bar with a little swatch of color in it. Click on the small button to the left of the color swatch to draw the map.

Next, double click on the layer.

Pull-down the "legend type" arrow: choose "graduated color."

Pull-down the "classification field"--choose "area"

Click on the "apply" button--note that you can see the changes in the map underneath and still have the window in which you were working be open. Now pull down "color ramps"--try a variety of different selections to see how these work.

Close the "legend editor" and see how your map looks. Try making a number of different maps.
