The Proclamation of the Islamic Republic of
Iran
On March 30-31,
1979, Ayatollah
Khomeini declared a public referendum on whether the new Iranian
government should be an Islamic Republic. The ballots simply read:
"Islamic Republic: Yes or No." The overwhelming majority were in favor
of Islamic government, giving Khomeini the mandate he desired to begin
what was, in his words, "God's government."
