This premier national event is staged by more than 1,500 volunteers and attracts over 150,000 people to downtown Indianapolis each year. Behind the scenes, Indiana Black Expo, Inc. and Indiana Sports Corporation, collaborate to organize the Classic.

Annually 150,000 people from across the country travel to the city of Indianapolis to be a part of an Electrifying Weekend… A weekend that consists of a spectacular parade that is unparalleled to any other in the city… A weekend that brings mega-super stars to the Circle City… A weekend filled with the battle of the bands… and a weekend that feature two historically black colleges colliding, head-to-head on the gridiron at the RCA Dome.

The Classic exists to celebrate, elevate and educate about African American excellence. Its participants are also its beneficiaries. Achieving cultural excellence is the purpose and the product. Everyone involved is vested in some level. They invest in the values. The Classic is an opportunity for each person to hold onto the bar of excellence while touching someone else.

Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America
Wright Museum for African American History
Saturday, October 2, 2004
10:00am-4:00pm

Click here to buy tickets for this Culture Bus Trip.

Presenting more than 100 lynching postcards, and related material, the exhibition, "Without Sanctuary", documents an era in American history that permitted unspeakable acts of terror against an unprotected segment of its population. In conjunction with the exhibition, and perhaps more important than the images themselves is "Baring Witness, Baring Our Souls", an eight-month forum designed to encourage dialogue related to the atrocities that occurred, the ensuing activism - initiated by black women, and supported by white women - and solutions to help stem the tide of intolerance and violence that continues to exist in the nation today. The forum, therefore, provides an array of educational programs including lectures, film series, and panel discussions that invite audience participation. This installation is organized from the collections of James Allen and John Littlefield, and presented by the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

John Woodford invites all to his retirement party October 18, 2004 from 3-5 pm in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union. John is a past president of ABPAFS and current member of the executive board. John is the Executive Editor, Michigan Today. You should reply to Barbara Wilson at bjwilson@umich.edu
