note to cartoonists | en espagñol October, 2004 DEAR FRIEND, I began teaching at the University of Michigan in September. I am very fortunate to be a part of this marvelous, diverse community of people and ideas. However, as the first cartoonist to be hired as a full-time faculty member in the School of Art and Design, I am frustrated by the lack of comics-related book resources for the enthusiastic and talented group of young artists I have found here.I see this as an opportunity for me, with your help, to contribute to the university and the department by enriching its bookshelves. The University of Michigan is a world-class institution, ranked consistently among the top ten universities in the United States. It is of the utmost importance that comics be represented here as a literary and visual art form, and you can be instrumental in making this happen. I welcome your donations and suggestions as I begin the on-going job of building a comics collection to be permanently housed in the University's Art, Architecture, and Engineering Library. The very book you donate could turn out to be the one that inspires some future master of the medium or changes the direction of another. Here in Ann Arbor, we are lucky to be relatively close to the Comic Art Collection at Michigan State University in East Lansing. We are not trying to duplicate this fantastic resource; rather, we want to first develop a solid foundation of comics and comics-related books for the use of students of the University of Michigan and others in the surrounding community. Second, there are also several niche areas we would like to develop in non-redundant directions. Please explore the following pages to find out how you can assist: Comic collection: general needs How to make a donation: guidelines All donations are appreciated and will be acknowledged. If you wish your donation to be anonymous, please let us know. A special note to cartoonists: Even if you are not able to donate your work, please send me your current e-mail and/or mailing address. I am occasionally able to invite speakers to the University, and there may occasionally be projects of interest to you that I'd like to let you know about. A special note to retailers, publishers, other institutional libraries, and distributors: We would love to hear from those of you who can offer discounted rates on multiple books and full sets of comics-related periodicals.
Most Sincere Thanks, Phoebe Gloeckner, PS: THE BOTTOM LINE: Don't throw your comics away. No matter their condition, send them to us. We'll find a use for them. main | general needs | niche areas | guidelines | donors | the library | U of M | Art + Design |
