Synopsis:
In this comedy, based on a German play and adapted by Bridie for the stage, the action centers on a small Scottishtown.  Frank Burdon goes there, leaving England, to take a local newspaper job.  He meets Victoria Gow.  Provost Gow, Victoria’s father, makes the mistake of using his power, by ordering Scruffy the Dog to be destroyed, when Mrs. Hegarty, a poor woman, cannot pay the yearly license fee.  Hearing of the woman’s plight, Frank writes the story, which becomes a national issue.  He is sued by Provost Gow for slander.  Frank feels he’s lost Victoria’s sympathy, but she rallies to his cause at the trial.
