Synopsis:
The story is set on board an ocean liner in the 1930s with people from every social class.  The voyage starts in Vera Cruz, Mexico, and goes to Bremerhaven, Germany.  The financially fortunate travel in first class, while those on the lower decks are sugarcane workers, having finished their harvest season in Cuba.  Even though the well-to-do Germans have been asked to sit at Captain Thiele’s table, two have not been asked – Glocken, a dwarf, and Lowentahl, a Jew.  Captain Thiele upholds Hitler’s Aryan purity belief.  After it is learned that Freytag’s wife is Jewish, Freytag leaves the captain’s table and joins Lowenthal and Glocken at thiers.  Dr. Schumann spends a great deal of time with La Condesa, a Spanish woman facing trouble, as a result of participating in political causes.  She most probably will go to prison, and to alleviate her predicament, turns to the comfort of taking drugs.  La Condesa and the doctor, suffering from a bad heart, fall in love.  Another passenger, Tenny, a has-been baseball player with a drinking problem, is unable to get over how his failure to hit an outside curve ball ended his career.  Explaining this to Glocken, Tenny does not have much success.  Not having much success in making his living as an artist is David.  He and Jenny argue, though their heated exchanges result in a passionate encounter.  No less obvious among the passengers, Mrs. Treadwell, a divorcee, enjoys flirting with men, but prohibits them from getting too close.  By preaching to the workers, Graf riles them up, until a fight erupts.  Accompanying Graf, is his son, Johann.  He finds a hooker in Pepe’s dance troupe, and opts for her services.  Not only does Pepe manage the troupe, he looks for sexual partners for those under his charge.  Made to feel unattractive, a young woman, Elsa, gets some help from Jenny and catches the attentions of Lowenthal.  During the ocean liner’s pause on its voyage, La Condessa gets off and is taken to jail.  As the ship precedes and nears Bremerhaven, Dr. Schumann dies from heart failure, and his coffin can be seen being wheeled down the dock and is followed by his family and the captain.  The rest of the travelers disembark, going on to whatever lies in their future.
