Synopsis:
Hester
Collyer
is
a
nervous
woman,
married
to
a
pillar
of
society,
Sir
William
Collyer,
a
judge,
whose
reputation
is
of
the
highest
order.
She
leaves
Sir
William
to
go
off
with
a
Royal
Air
Force
pilot,
Freddie
Page,
an
irresponsible
type
of
man,
whose
behavior
is
coupled
with
a
drinking
problem.
Confused
by
her
situation,
Hester
tries
to
commit
suicide,
but
is
saved
by
a
gambler,
Miller,
who
had
once
been
a
doctor.
Because
Miller
lives
upstairs,
he
comes
to
see
her
often,
provides
her
with
professional
services,
and
socializes
with
Hester.
In
an
apartment
next
door
lives
Dawn
Maxwell,
who
does
not
mind
her
own
business.
Although
Sir
William
wants
Hester
back,
she
nonetheless
desires
something
that
might
be
better
than
an
undependable
Freddie
and
the
boring
life
with
her
husband.
Listening
to
Miller’s
advice
that
a
man
does
not
necessarily
have
to
be
the
way
to
happiness,
Hester
learns
she
can
create
her
own
life.
