As in sports and music, practicing should be done under

periodic observation and correction by an experienced Coach,

who spots old behavior and helps the Learner practice the

desired new behaviors.  Without coaching we lose our way

and don’t practice the right pattern, or practice ineffectively.

Without coaching, a change in our mindset -- in our brain’s

wiring -- is unlikely to occur.

Once you’ve learned the Improvement Kata, the Coaching

Kata develops your skill as a manager for teaching the

pattern of the Improvement Kata in everyday work.

You can’t separate coaching from what you are teaching.

A golf coach won’t help you learn to play the guitar, and vice

versa.  The Coaching Kata is a practice routine specifically

for teaching a scientific working pattern like the Improvement Kata.

Practice Guide, which is a free download on the Materials to Download page of this website.

interaction between the Coach

and the Learner.  Improvement,

adaptiveness and innovation

are something you can teach

and integrate in daily work.

Coaching Cycles... the Core Practice Routine of the Coaching Kata

One coaching cycle involves the Coach (manager) asking the Five Coaching Kata

Questions of the Learner, who uses the PDCA Cycles Record.  This is done once

per day at a scheduled time, plus as the need arises, taking 10-15 minutes each time.

The Five Coaching Kata Questions apply in any situation, whether you are at the

senior-management level or at the level of individual work processes.

It’s also free training.  Since this coaching is done by line managers while the

Learner works on a real goal, it’s done without hiring extra staff and there’s

no extra cost or application delay for the Learner’s capability development.
