My project attempted to embody elements of urbanism within the Holland Civic Center by providing for public access, social life and promenade. The Civic Center directly connects to the public space as the sidewalk merges into the Civic Center to become the ramp. The ramp is an important aspect of the Center as it functions as both circulation space and social space. It goes through the whole building, as a free-standing structure, varying in its width to accommodate different programs such as meeting space, lounge, and roof theater. The ramp culminates at the cantilever, which offers views toward the river and downtown, re-engaging the urban context.
