Holland's newly imagined Civic Center is poised to become the new true ìcenterî of its community, as a place to both gather and share, as well as a place to emanate from. The re-situation of the building onto the corner of 8th Street and pine Ave anchors the 8th street promenade both physically and visually, which leverages the building from a periodically utilized space to one which is adaptable to a more weekly rhythm of program. This newly defined urban corner then becomes the hinge of the new Civic Center, connecting its athletic and civic functions with a biking transit center to serve both commuters and tourists. The biking transit center is complete with bike storage, visible through the angled glazing on the buildingís prominent corner, lockers and showers below grade, and a upper level café accessible via a bike ramp that is prominently integrated into the buildingís front elevation. The Civic Center's two halls work in tandem to accommodate specific programs such as basketball games and indoor markets, but also are easily converted to host an even larger number of one-off functions such as conventions, shows, and interest groups.
