Grand Haven is a city that lacks a drawing force to its downtown area. Even in the summer months, when tourists significantly outnumber the locals, people flock to the water and beaches. This has developed a problem that is different than most cities face when trying to bring people to the downtown area. People are not coming from the suburbs, but from walking down a boardwalk, or getting out of their boat. The city needs a strong luring force that attracts people from many directions. I believe this force is a central gathering space that is surrounded by activity. I have proposed an amphitheatre that is encompassed by two separate buildings and the existing piano factory. Elements of the amphitheatre are continued into the form of the encompassing buildings, highlighted by second floor stadium seating and open air dining. The outer faÁades of the two buildings echo the encompassing of the interior with continuous horizontal lines uniting the buildings. The main entry has been accented to encourage activity within the site.
