Precision Laser Positioning System

A precision 2-axis laser positionining system was designed for use in Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiments in the Physical Fluids Laboratory at the University of Utah. The system was modeled in MS Excel, and optimization techniques were used to develop a design that met the accuracy and rigidity requirements at the lowest cost. The design employed linear bearings, ball screws, stepper motors, and the associated controls in order to move the laser stand to the required position efficiently within the required position tolerance.
