Ultrasonic Anemometer Mounting System

In preparation for research performed during summer 2003 for the Joint Urban 2003 Atmospheric Dispersion Study in Oklahoma City by the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, two unique mounting systems were developed for a METEK ultrasonic anemometer. The anemometers were to be securely attached to the tops of buildings in downtown Oklahoma City in order to more accurately measure air velocities as part of the above research project. Below are sample photos of the two systems.

Design Requirements:

  • Securely mount the anemometers to the unique building configurations required.
  • Reliably prevent detachment of the anemometer or mounting system to prevent injury or property damage.
  • Provide a means to accurately adjust the orientation of the anemometer.
  • Provide a rigid securement to prevent excessive deflection under strong wind conditions to prevent measurement erros.
  • Be light in weight and easy to mount to reduce the difficulty involved in mounting the anemometers.
