An Afternoon at the Beach
On the Friday free, most of the students at the Erice International School for Subnuclear Physics explored historic sites in southern Sicily. The Acropolis was very imporessive.
Above one of the most beautiful lecture halls I have seen is this amazing view of Sicily. The Patrick M. S. Blackett Institute of the Ettore Majorana International Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice houses the Paul A. M. Dirac Lecture Hall. During the breaks, we enjoyed this wonderful sight while discussing physics.
On the edge of the ancient city lay two beautiful castles, that of Pepoli and Venus. Pepoli Castle offered a breathtaking view of Erice and Sicily and a pleasent ambience to read mathematics texts.
Selinunte's most impressive ruin--albeit reconstructed. It is visible from the Acripolis and is an inspiring piece of history.
When most people were leaving Erice, three of us ventured to the island of Favignana from Trapani, home of these gorgeous, rocky shorlines.
While some of the students ran up to the Acropolis to explore the ruins, others enjoyed the pleasent Mediterranean. It had not occured to me that a bathing suit may be appropriate at a school for physics--besides, there was little room after my 'necessary' textbooks were packed. Nevertheless, I was able to enjoy both getting sunburned on the beach and exploring the ancient ruins nearby.
