British and Continental Rhetoric & Elocution

Source: a bibliography published in the 1950's by the Speech Association of America.

Of the 117 works, approximately two-thirds are British rhetorics written in English or Latin, while the remaining one-third represent the Continental rhetorical tradition and are written in Latin, French, or Italian.

British Manuscripts Project

The British Manuscripts Project, undertaken during World War II by University Microfilms under the sponsorship of the American Council of Learned Societies, filmed more than 11,000 manuscripts in British libraries. The University Library and the Library of Congress are the sole depositories of all films produced by the Project.

Early American Newspapers, 1690-1900

Source: History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690-1820 by Clarence Brigham. Expanded to include a few titles up to 1900.

A microfilm collection of early American newspapers, including runs up to 1900 of any newspaper that began publication by 1820. Selected titles that began publication between 1820 and 1860 are also included.

Encompasses most books printed in England, Scotland, and Ireland and English-language books printed abroad from 1475 to 1640. No periodicals included.

Early English Books II, 1641-1700

A continuation of Pollard and Redgrave, containing books printed in Great Britain and British North America and English-language books printed elsewhere from 1641-1700. Set includes everything from Wing except separate printings of the Bible, separate statutes and proclamations, American imprints found in Evan's American Bibliography, books in Welsh and certain almanacs, sermons, liturgical works, Quaker tracts, and Irish and Scottish official publications.

Guide: Author, title, and subject access for units 1-60 is available in seven volume index Accessing Early English Books. Serials/Microforms has reel guides located with the set.

Early English Newspapers

Source: compilation of the Burney collection at British Library and Nichols collection at Bodleian.

Comprehensive collection of more than 800 newspapers representing metropolitan London, areas outside London, and colonial possesions. Most are 18th century, but 17th is also included.

Guide: Non-cumulated guide, arranged by title, indicates time span available on film, publication dates, bibliographic information, and reel number.

The Eighteenth Century (ESTC)

Based on the Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalog, a machine readable compilation of holdings from a number of libraries. ESTC is a file on RLIN.

ESTC includes any work printed in Great Britain or its territories in any language and any work printed in English anywhere in the world between 1701 and 1800. Includes books, broadsides, Bibles, tract books, sermons, printed ephemera. Does not include newspapers. (See Early English Newspapers)

English Literary Periodicals, 1681-1914

Source: a bibliography produced by Prof. Richmond Bond of University of North Carolina in cooperation with a committee of scholars.

Predominately literary in nature, but many publications are aimed at a wider audience. Coverage is broader for the 18th century and narrows over the years as publishing burgeons.
