On November 1, 2007, Gus received the 2006 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers. This award highlights the perceived importance of our group's research for the future of pharmaceutical sciences in the United States. PECASE awards are intended to recognize and nurture the research work of outstanding scientists and engineers who, while early in their research careers, show exceptional creativity, talent and potential for leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge during the twenty-first century. Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Director of the National Institutes of Health, nominated Prof. Rosania "for the development of experimental and computational tools for developing drugs targeted to subcellular compartments". Dr. John H. Marburger III, Director of the Office of Science & Technology Policy and advisor to the President stated "Selection for this award is based on the combination of innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and community service demonstrated through scientific leadership and community outreach." Walter Schaffer, senior scientific advisor for extramural research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) commented "This is the highest award the nation makes to young scientists and we are very pleased that you were selected."
