On Friday June 2, and Saturday June 3, 2006, GLAAC (the Great Lakes Association of Astronomy Clubs) will host the Kensington “Summer Star Gaze.” It will be held, weather permitting, from 6:00 pm to Midnight on both nights (unless it is cloudy, in which case the event may be cancelled on one or both evenings). It will be held at Kensington Metropark.
(Call the telescope hotline at (313) 577-8400 ext 475 to set an appointment or if you have other questions.)
There was a different event on September 29-30, 2006 (also held at Kensington Metropark), for more information on that event see Kensington Astronomy at the Beach.
There is no admission fee to attend but a Metropark vehicle pass is required. (Vehicle pass can be purchased at the gate for a fee of $4.00). The event takes place at Martindale Beach (inside Kensington Metropark). Food and beverages can be purchased at the Metropark concession stand.
The night sky isnt as dark as it used to be: it is harder to see stars, galaxies and nebulae. For information on why this happened and what you can do about it. People will be looking through telescopes! The use of white light of any kind makes this difficult. So, please be considerate and use only lights with red filters. And do not use flash photography.
