A story Leona told -- Made a pact with fellow soldiers not to shave if they made it back from a battle, in honor of those who didn't. Kept it -- his beard was long and his wife wouldn't let the doctor shave it when he was diagnosed with a kind of skin disease on his face, informing the doctor that "He'd rather die."

From obit written by Leona:

At age 15, Lucius moved with parents to Pecatonica, IL, then to Ogle Co.,IL, in 1859. Later he went to MO. During Civil War, he enlisted inindependent regiment, served 4 months, and received hon. discharge.Returned to Ogle Co. and enlisted in 92nd mounted IL infantry. Marchedwith Sherman to the sea.

After marriage, lived in Marion, IL. Came to Clay County in spring of1896 and lived on a farm 1 mile n. of Langdon. Later moved 3 1/2 miles S.of Langdon and later to a house in Langdon.

(The book "Revielle at Washington" has a map showing Ft. Runyon as partof the defenses of Washington, DC in 1864.)

Died of erysipelas. (Erysipelas - Contagious skin disease, due toStreptococci with vesicular and bulbous lesions)
