Adam Wintro was a large, well-built man born in Penn. (We have his family Bible.) He adored his daughter Cynthia whom he called "Bub" and made a boy of her. She went everywhere with him and worked side by side with him.
She was tall and spare built with black hair and blue eyes, probably resembling her father a great deal. She had one brother William Wintro (a musician) and six sisters.
Cynthia was my great-grandmother. We have several pictures of her and I well remember her in her old age.
Adam Wintro married Mary Clayton.

Genealogy, By Hazel Spencer Phillips
Descendants of Pioneers Still Abound...
...The Marriage bond certifies that Adam Wintrode of lawful age and Polly (Mary) Clayton with signed consent of her father, Thomas Clayton dated Feb 16, 1808." The marriage was performed Feb. 19 1808, by Andrew Lytle, Esquire at her home. (Dawn's note: Jacob Bare sold land to Andrew Lytle in January 1818.)
Unfortunately for the newlyweds, who hoped to have sons to help with the clearing and farm work, the Bible of Adam and Mary Clayton Wintrode lists eight girls before a single son was born. Incidentally, Adam gave a fine leather-bound Bible to each child as they married. All were religious people. The Bible lists their family as follows:
Adam Wintro -- Born Feb 10, 1787, died 1861.
Mary Clayton -- Born Nov 24, 1789, died
1875.
Anne Wintro, daughter -- Born April 4 1809.
Married Isaac Cole, Nov 27, 1827.
Jamima Wintro, daughter -- Born Dec 21,
1811. Married Thomas Osborn.
Elizabeth Wintro, daughter -- Born Nov 14
1814. Married Isiah Osborn.
Mary M. Wintro, daughter -- Born Sept 7,
1817. Died August 1820.
Cynthia Wintro, daughter -- Born Feb 21
1820. Married Henry Osborn.
Lydia Wintro, daughter -- Born Aug 23, 1822.
Died in childhood. (Dawn's note: Lydia's stone is placed ("reinterred")
next to her Wintrode grandparents' at the Deerfield, aka Snook, cemetery
in South Lebanon. She died on August 19, 1823, three years exactly after
her sister Mary, whose stone is also beside the single stone for Peter
(d. c. 1809 South Lebanon) and Mary Wintro. Mary Wintro could beAnna Maria
Michael Winterroth. The other possibility for that stone is that it refers
to Adam's older brother, also named Peter, d. 1859 Warren Co, and his wife,
Anna Maria Schnorf.)
Polly Wintro, daughter -- Born Nov 23 1824.
Married Frederick Michael.
Rebecca Wintro, daughter -- Born June 21,
1828. Married John Hoff, Jr.
William C. Wintro, son -- Born Jan 5 1831.
Died 1857. (Dawn's note: Dec 28, according to transcription of Adam
Wintro family bible below.)
Adam Wintro, a large man and very active, owned land east of Deerfield. The Wintros were educated people.
The daguerre-o-type photo of his wife, whom all called "Granny Wintro" as she aged, was given to me by my grandfather, Abram Osborn. Grandfather always lighted her pipe from the open fireplace when she stayed with them. He was about five or six years old.
I asked him how he lighted it. He said with candle-wood. That is a highly resinous wood cut into long splinters and kept by the fireside for carrying fire from one place to another.
Most of these precious ancestors were buried in the old Deerfield cemetery. Those stones remaining were moved to the present South Lebanon cemetery. Others were buried in the Fellowship Cemetery. Still others, such as the Rev. Solider Joseph Orborn, were placed in isolated graves.

Contract for Adam Wintrow's headstone (Dawn's note: Adam's headstone was still in good condition as of June 26, 2001, EXCEPT that it had been broken in two, perhaps during the move from old Deerfield Cemetery to Snook, and then cemented down in two different places far apart from each other in the same southmost row at the bottom of the SW hill, with the top half cemented upside down second from the right end of the row, bottom half placed 11th stone from right, between stones for Rachel Berryhill and Eliza.)
I have this day bought of W.S. Evans & Co, of Franklin, Warren County, Ohio, one set of Italian Marble Grave Stones.
